Superhero movies have been the talk of Hollywood town over the last decade. The resurgence of Marvel Movies is testimony to what extent the millennials have popularised the superhero concept. The franchise, struggling to keep up with its bread-winners like Spiderman and Hulk, has become a cult. Big theatre release, a massive ensemble of characters and whooping budgets that promise to win back the investment. It would be untrue to claim that superheroes have disappeared from the movie scene, but the extent to which they have captured the Hollywood market makes it a compelling case. So why not look deep into the invincible suits...
There is a theory to makes a hero. The first part is the discovery, where you introduce your star as an average person struggling with mundane jobs, mostly away from attention. The journey unfolds his realisation of power and subsequent claim to fame. For a lot of the superhero movies, directors had kept their these lives distinct. In many films, the heroes have difficulty saving their real identities from prying eyes. Then came the villain, who challenged this hero to a duel, ultimately exposing his weakness. Now the hero has to save the ones at stake had to give up on his dreams. He summons his suit for the one last time until the climax, giving all that he had. And there is a trick which master storytellers have pulled out of their sleeves, time and again - the hero's sacrifice.
What differs from one story to another is the hero's weakness and that mundane connection that he strives to preserve. That's what brings us to the reasons why we may have re-found the love for superhero enterprises. Hollywood is one of America's (the united states) cultural influences worldwide. Because its language and land have histories that date past its origin, Hollywood is the art in which America sells its dream. Now, what the movie has as an audience, is an age group that has heard of the Star tears franchise but never heard of it, has read space missions in textbooks, but knows manned space travel might not happen soon, has heard of a world war, without ever knowing what it feels to be in one. In a short phase, a global world, wondering what the fruits of this globalisation are.
This is where we arrive at the future of superheroes; although their stories are predictable and outcomes are known, they have portrayed us. They have presented our aspirations. There are outliers, of course, choosing to reflect the philosophy of our days (Batman series and Jocker). But what has made the most of this movement? Is the fantasy that science will empower humans to fight aliens which shall arrive from the skies? Are we longing for the war? Are we waiting to expand into space above us? The most important aspect of the movies, the heroes are no longer under masks; they are amongst us. We have moved away from wicked millionaires to millionaire superheroes. These indicate two crucial factors of our society: the fact that everyone can be chosen and that economics and wealth are becoming means rather than ends. Is not that what the American dream was !!!
